Selective Mutism & Social Anxiety Disorder
Learning to Socialize & Communicate within the REAL WORLD

3 Disc Set! (2 Audio CD's, PDF Handouts, 1 CD-ROM with sinced audio/slides)

'Actual 2 hour Lecture Presentation from Dr. Shipon-Blum's Selective Mutism Conference!'
Watch and Listen from your computer!  ~  Listen in your car!  ~ Print handouts to share with others!
School is not the only setting that is difficult for the child/teen with Selective Mutism and Social Anxiety Disorder. Socializing & communicating in public settings can be anxiety provoking and/or challenging for our children/teens.
To help the child suffering in silence, parents, professionals and educators need to understand that children/teens with SM often have difficulty communicating nonverbally. Some may 'whisper' thru a parent or make sounds and some may shut down and therefore, not communicate at all when they sense an expectation for speech and communication. In addition, social comfort and communication will vary depending on the setting and individuals present in that setting.
This presentation will begin with the characteristics of children with SM and the importance of understanding the child's unique needs when developing strategies/interventions for the REAL WORLD.
A brief discussion of the Social Communication Bridge will be mentioned to highlight the importance of the SM Stages of Social Communication (c)
Information on HOW to determine the child's social communication baseline skills (i.e., is the child noncommunicative? Nonverbal? In the Verbal Transition stage (whispering, making sounds, etc.) or Verbal) in particular social settings will be discussed. Specific strategies and interventions to help the child feel less anxious, build the social comfort and to progress into verbal communication within ALL real world settings will be highlighted.
The following REAL WORLD areas (and more ..) will be discussed in detail during the presentation:
-Home: Answering/making phone calls, handling social gatherings/parties in the home, interacting with relatives and family friends, having friends over and going to a friend's house, etc.
-Out 'n About: Interacting & responding to store clerks, giving an order in a restaurant, going to parties, going to summer camp, traveling (family vacations), etc.
-Potentially stressful situations: Doctor/dentist visits, skeptical family/friends, childcare dilemmas, handling emergencies in and out of the home, dealing with peer pressures/social withdrawal.
Case study descriptions and explanations will be discussed throughout the presentation to provide participants with a deeper understanding of key concepts and examples of strategies/interventions.

BOOKS:
Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child

The book is informative and entertaining and goes into detail about tactics that can be easily incorporated into the classroom to benefit and accommodate the needs of the Selectively Mute child. Recommendations on testing, IEP development and multiple methods to help lower anxiety, build self esteem and increase communication comfort within the school are emphasized throughout this book.
The Ideal Classroom Setting for the Selectively Mute Child is easy to read, graphically attractive and is an important reference for all those involved with a Selectively Mute child within the school environment.

Easing School Jitters for the Selectively Mute

Dr. Elisa Shipon-Blum’s second edition guide book, "Easing School Jitters for the Selectively Mute Child" is an updated version of the first edition. It is a down-to-earth informational book that will provide advice in an entertaining manner. Every colorful page is filled with facts, helpful ideas, reasons that Selectively Mute Children feel the way they do, and an interactive section where parents can work with children to help them list, draw and write about the things that make them feel good about themselves and see the positive aspects of school. The final chapter of the book is an Ask the Doc- Frequently Asked Question which focuses on common school-related dilemmas that the child with SM may experience and offers an easy-to-understand approach for handling various situations and issues. The book is a must for parents, teachers and treating professionals trying to help the child with SM conquer his/her fears, worries and communication difficulties within the school environment.

Understanding Katie
Understanding Katie is a beautiful and engaging picture/storybook detailing a day in the life of Katie, a child with Selective Mutism. Through her experiences at home and school on a typical school day, readers gain insight into the everyday struggles and triumphs of children with SM. Parents can learn from Katie's mother as she helps her child through anxious moments of her day, and children with SM will identify with Katie and take comfort in knowing that there are other children "just like them". The inside illustrations are in outline form, allowing children to personalize their "Katie" books by coloring the pages.

Supplement Treatment Guide to Understanding Katie
The Supplement Treatment Guide Book to Understanding Katie is meant to supplement the story book, ‘Understanding Katie,’ in order to help others understand Katie’s feelings, explain Katie’s actions, and to introduce tactics/techniques for parents, teachers and treating professionals that can be used in order to help and offer support to a child with SM in times of stress and frustration.  By reading ‘Understanding Katie,’ adults involved in the life of a child with Selective Mutism and social anxiety will hopefully begin to comprehend how this child feels and perhaps learn productive ways in which to help.

For individuals learning about Selective Mutism, there are certain important concepts to understand. The Supplement Guide goes over in detail, necessary therapeutic terms and that should be used to help the child suffering in silence.

To truly understand how to HELP the child with SM, individuals need to ‘SEE” Selective Mutism as a true communication anxiety.
Treatment should never be geared towards getting the child to speak immediately but helping the child progress through the stages of communication in a step-wise fashion which is based on the child's present communication anxiety level.

Treatment should be focused on the WHOLE CHILD, not their mutism. The Supplement Treatment Guide to Understanding Katie will therefore help parents, teachers and treating professionals SEE SM from the correct perspective and therefore be able to help ease the child anxiety while at the same time, help the child build their self esteem as well as communication and confidence in social settings.
